Examples of Improvisation you can do right now!
The easiest way to improvise is over basic C piano accompaniment with pentatonic scales on your instrument

First remember the pentatonic scale from the presentation:
A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five pitches per octave as compared to the major scale which is made up of seven distinct notes.  What is most important to what we are learning here about the pentatonic scale is: you can play it over any chord progressions in the key you are in and the notes all sound correct.

Example in the key of C Major Pentatonic:

Here are examples of a piano improvizing over a C major accompaniment:
Example #1 is based on a familar melody, can you guess what song it is?

Which one did you like better?

Why did you like it better?

My favorite is #4 because it followed all the basic rules it used the notes of the pentatonic scale, contained rests, borrowed a bit from hot cross buns, and used repetition of notes.

Your turn to improvise:
Steps:

#1 Think of 12 bars of rhythm to use.  Remember keep it simple! If you need to write it down using rhythmic stem notation.

#2 Pick the correct notes:

These are the notes you would play on your instrument for the concert key of C:
Flute

Clarinet
   Midi Clarinet
Alto Saxophone
   Midi Alto Saxophone
